Release the break that is holding back your career!

Your football career is like your car

It’s great you show so much ambition but you also have to deal with the added pressure and scrutiny that comes with it.

Your football career is like your car.

Now you are probably thinking WTF but stay with me.

Break your car down into three different sections.

  1. The ENGINE =  Your mindset
  2. The DRIVER = You as a person
  3. The CAR = Your performance

Simple, right?

Principle 1:

Let’s look at the engine.

The engine is your mindset.

Your engine needs the right fuel, if you were to put unleaded into a diesel your car won’t work.

Telling yourself that you aren’t good enough after you make a mistake or always thinking about what will go wrong before kick off is like putting unleaded into a diesel.

How has doing that helped your career and confidence to date?

Principle 2:

You are the driver of your car and your career.

The further you go in your career the more distractions and potential setbacks occur.

Dealing with judgement from more supporters on social media, moving from Sportscene where thousands watch to Match Of The Day where millions watch. Going from playing in front of 15,000 to playing in front of 40,000 each week. An increase in wages from £2,500 to £25,000 a week.

It’s great you show so much ambition but you also have to deal with the added pressure and scrutiny that comes with it.

Just imagine getting your move as getting a new faster more powerful motor.

There are so many examples out there of footballers who have made moves and not been able to handle it. Depression, gambling issues, relationship struggles, loneliness, money issues and homesickness being just a few of the many struggles that can arrive at your door as a footballer.

The car (or your career) and the rate it goes is never the problem, you the driver and being able to handle it is.

Driving on an empty road when no one is watching is simple but what about the bumps, roadblocks, flat tyres and diversions?

Can you bounce back from them when they inevitably come along?

Principle 3:

The car itself represents your performance

The cool thing is:

Feed your engine with the right fuel and be the best driver you can be and the performance takes care of itself.

Better people make better drivers and better people also make better footballers.

The great thing about a car, it doesn’t care where you have started from, what you did on your last journey or what you may come across on this journey, it only cares about what you do in the here and now.

Imagine if you were to play your next game not thinking about what went wrong in the last one?

Confidence, belief and certainty that you can perform will go through the roof.

My message in summary is pretty simple:

If you screw the arse out of your car and break it, you buy a new one.

Unfortunately, if you don’t take care of your career, you don’t get another go of it when it’s done.

Be patient and take your time, stay in your own lane. Judging yourself against others and expecting 70mph in 3rd gear is a great way to ensure you break your motor.

Don’t be a player who goes through their career with one foot on the accelerator (Chasing a new club and contract) whilst the other is on the brake (Self-doubt).
