Want to play at the highest level but unsure how to get there?

Do you really need to have a step by step plan about how you are going to get to the top

You know what you want but you don't have a clue about how you are going to make it happen

“Once I work out a plan for getting myself to the highest level I will start taking action on it.”

Let me guess, you know what you want?

~Play at the highest level and make good money in the process~

but you don’t have a clue how you are going to make it happen?

But do you need to know?

Do you really need to have a step by step plan about how you are going to get to the top before you can create the belief, confidence and focus to take action on getting there?

Many would say you do but I would argue not.

Being a footballer is a career that has so much uncertainty around it.

“Will I get an improved contract?
Will the scout who is watching me next week rate me?
Will that old injury flare up again?
Will my manager be true to his word and help me push on in your career?
Is my agent doing what he says in the background?”

It can drive you mad and leave you feeling frustrated, doubting yourself and at times lost.

This doubt and feeling lost can quickly turn into standing still feeling sorry for yourself and a lack of action which then escalates that feeling of being lost.

In fact, the only things that are certain in your career are someone will slaughter you on Twitter at some point and there will come a day where it all ends for you and you stop playing.

So with so much uncertainty how can you make a step by step plan from where you are to playing at the highest level?

I don’t think you can.

Without doubt, there may be certain markers and milestones you think you will need to hit but that is different to having every move planned out.

Some of these milestones may not even happen.

There are thousands of footballers who have had successful careers and done more than they had ever dreamed off.

Yet every one of those careers and the path those players followed was unique to them. No two careers are the same.

So don’t let the fact you aren’t sure of how to get to the top derail you from your efforts in getting there.

Think of it a bit like taking a car journey in the dark.

You turn your lights on and can only see 20 yards ahead of you, you can only see the next bend.

So you take the bend and then soon enough another appears.

You can drive for 100s of miles and complete a journey whilst only seeing 20 yards ahead of you and taking things as they come on the road.

You can do the same with your career.

Take things as they come.

But you need to make a start, you need to take action.

Just focus on taking one bit of action that will take you a wee bit closer to where you want to go with your career.

Look at one thing you can do to improve the mental, physical, tactical or technical side of your game and work on that.

Or take one bit of action to help you become the person you must be in order to get to the top.

When you take one bit of action the next step and what you need to do becomes that bit clearer.

When it comes to the questions you have in your head about which is the right move to make in your career or what is the right thing to do, unfortunately, to work out whether something is helpful or unhelpful for your career you can only ever find out by taking action.

So don’t allow the fact you don’t know step by step how you are going to get to the highest level increase your fear and hold you back from taking the steps you need to start taking in order to get there.

Start by just taking ACTION.

Just focus on taking one bit of action that will take you a wee bit closer to where you want to go with your career
